Karadiyana waste recycling project: An environmental crisis
The foundation stone for the proposed garbage recycling plant at Karadiyana, in Piliyandala was laid several years ago, but now it lies abandoned.
The project’s aim was to produce up to 40Mw of power, through the recycling of waste. But it has now become an inconvenience as it is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which poses a risk for the people in the area.
Western Province Solid Waste Management Unit Director Nalin Mannapperuma confessed the proposed recycling plant has run into trouble.
In 2010, short term and long term plans were drawn as a solution for the Karadiyana garbage dump. In 2011, the Government had reached an agreement with a private company, but in 2015 that company could not fulfill its obligations.
Again in 2017, a new agreement was reached with another company, but again due to an issue with investments, the project failed. As a result, another environmental issue has been created for our country.
