Education unions have called on the Government to intervene and keep a check on tuition teachers who are charging exorbitant fees for online tuition.

The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) complained that despite the economic difficulties suffered by people due to the recurring COVID-19 situation in the country, tuition masters continued to charge the same fees as before.

CTU President Priyantha Fernando saidOrdinary Level (O/L) students who were preparing for their national exams in January 2021 were paying up to Rs.5000 per month for online maths or science tuition.

He said this was the fees levied before COVID-19. Students also had to pay extra money for online data Mr. Fernando added.

“This is unreasonable,” he said.

He said conducting online classes was cheaper for tuition masters as they do not have to pay rent for premises and utility bills. He said they should charge less because of these reasons.

The Government must check this ‘tuition mafia’ and relieve parents who were already burdened with economic difficulties, Mr. Fernando said.
