Ashley Ratnavibhushana, veteran film critic, international film expert and the joint President of the Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific Cinema (NETPAC), was invited to be a member of the jury of 7th Silk Road International Film Festival held in the city of Xi’an in Central China from October 10 – 16.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and international travel restrictions, the jury members were acting as a virtual jury. Mr. Ratnavibhushana was working along with two times Oscar awarded Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi. Farhadi won two Academy awards for Best Foreign Language Film for his ‘A Separation’ and ‘The Salesman’.

The other jury members were Polish director and screenwriter Malgorzata Szumowska, Israeli director Amos Gitai, Italian producer and AD Rai Cinema, Paolo Del Brocco, Chinese Director and Screenwriter Lu Chuan and Chinese Actress Hui Yinghong.

A journalist, author, and film society activist, Ashley Ratnavibhushana is also the Director of

the Asian Film Centre (AFC) in Sri Lanka and the foremost interpreter of Sri Lankan cinema to the outside

world. He is the founding editor of the journal Cinesith, co-author of Profiling Sri Lankan Cinema

(AFC, 2000) and Early Sri Lankan Cinema in association with South Indian Film Industry

(NETPAC & AFC, 2012), co-editor of LJP – Lester James Peries, Life and Work (AFC, 2004), An Incomplete Sentence – The Cinema of Dharmasena Pathiraja (NETPAC, 2009), Malini – Up Above (Surasa/2018) and editor – Reminiscences – (Government Information Dept. /2013).

Presently he is the joint President and the Jury Coordinator for NETPAC and is also a member of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) and President of the Sri Lanka Federation of Film Societies affiliated to IFFS.

Ashley has served on a number of Juries at International Film Festivals. He was the Executive Coordinator of the Commonwealth Film Festival held in Colombo in parallel to Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting  (CHOGM – 2013).  Ashley has worked as the Senior Asian Programmer for the 2nd International Film Festival of Colombo.
