Provincial Education Director E.P.T.K. Ekanayake speaks out

Central Province students have not lost their trend in educating themselves for exams due to a new concept that was brought forward by the Education Provincial Director E. T. P. K. Ekanayake and his team of educators.

Mr. Ekanayake said it is the prerogative of educators to find ways and means to keep school students in touch education in face of this pandemic. He said it is the duty of all educators to find ways and means to keep the body and soul of the students alive, since early this year.

Having seen the problem, especially for children sit the G.C.E. O/L exams next year, Mr. Ekanyake and a team of highly qualified educators within the region, made plans as to how it could be done. They set about drawing on the various resources available to them and produced nine colorful books for the subjects.  There were thirty-eight subjects from which a student could choose nine subjects.  To this end, they drew up plans for a set of nine books, both for online and offline students. The online students were most benefited as they had the books on hand and computer facilities. The team was bent on keeping the mental requirements of the students, even though they had not been able to attend schools. This was no easy task and they had to seek the help of principals, teachers and parents.

The nine textbooks that would go to 41, 000 students from the Central Province who are sitting the O/L exams next year

This project paved the way forward for the future primary and secondary level education in the province. The foundation of the project was syllabus based requirements of the students.  The Provincial Education Director said they co-operated with the best tutors and highly qualified teachers for these subjects.

The next step of their plan was to release the nine text books in-line with the schedule, so these books could be used by online and offline students.  Mr. Ekanyakae said 46 percent of the students were online students, and the rest were working offline in from home.    “Mind you there are no tuition classes, and the students have to depend on what has been taught by their teachers,” said Mr. Ekanayake.

He also said this concept was the forerunner of a project known as “Silpalokaya” that prevails in the Central Province.  The funds for this project came from the consolidated fund for Silpalokaya, in the Central Province.

Mr. Ekanayakesaid this project would be successful and the success would be realised, after the students received their results for the O/L exams.
