HelpAge assists underprivileged Senior Citizens in Weligama
View(s):Home garden tool kits and seed packets were distributed among more than 300 less-privileged elderly citizens who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Weligalma under a programme initiated by HelpAge Sri Lanka (HASL) in collaboration with HelpAge International, UK.
The tool packs and seed packets worth over Rs. 1 million were distributed through Weligama Senior Citizens Federation and 30 Senior Citizens Committees in Weligama Divisional Secretariat Division with the aim of improving their livelihoods.
While following the health guidelines, the HelpAge team led by Programme Manager Chaminda de Silva visited each Senior Citizens Committee to hand over the items and seed packets. They also handed over few food and non-food items including face masks, soap, and sanitizers.
The programme was funded by Sponsor a Grandparent programme (SAG) of HelpAge International under the guidance of HelpAge Chairman Tilak de Zoysa.
HelpAge Executive Director Samantha Liyanawaduge highlighted the importance of distributing tool kits and seed packets to underprivileged Senior citizens at this crucial juncture where the daily income of senior citizens had drastically declined.
He said the initiative would be carried out even in other districts in the coming months.
