The Government’s attempt to admit students for the grade two to grade 11 classes in schools next year, goes against the Supreme Court order prohibiting classrooms to have more than 35 students, the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said this week.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said the Education Ministry had sent letters to all public schools asking them to admit students from grade two to grade 11 next year.

This is in violation of the 2011 Supreme Court order where all admissions to grade 2 and above were to be stalled from 2016 onwards.

A circular was to be sent out to all schools in this effect, Mr Stalin said, and the Education Ministry agreed to gradually start reducing the numbers from 2016 reaching the ideal number of 35 students by 2021.

MrStalin said the Education Ministry failed to issue the circular, and it had instead issued fresh instructions to admit children to classes between Grade two and 11, next year.

“The demand for admissions to popular and leading national schools is high, and admitting students between grade two and grade 11 will only crowd classrooms again. This will also make physical distancing difficult during the pandemic,” he said. (CC)
