Thirteen State university projects to be initiated in 2021, through foreign funds and ADB grants
View(s):Foreign funds from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Japan and India and grants from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will be used in a number of state university sector projects next year, the University Grants Commission (UGC) said.
The Ruhuna University’s centre for naval studies and shipping and the medical faculties of the Sabaragamuwa and Moratuwa universities will be among 13 projects to be financed by the Education Ministry and government and foreign funds.
A sum of 200 million rupees would be granted jointly by the Government and the State of Kuwait for the University of Moratuwa’s medical faculty next year.
Next year would see Rs.600 million allocated for the township project of the Wayamba University jointly by the Government and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Rs. 300 million would be allocated to Jaffna University’s faculty of agriculture jointly by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government.
Meanwhile, 1,610 million rupees would be allocated for the Eastern University’s faculty of health care science next year through joint funding from Kuwait and the Government.
Swami Vipulananda Aesthetic Institute would be given 290 million rupees through joint funding from India and the Government.
Funds from Saudi Arabia would be used for the 400 million allocation for the Sabaragamuwa University’s medical faculty.
Rs. 1,800 million would be allocated jointly by the ADB and the Government for science technology projects – the faculties of technology for Sabaragamuwa University, Kelaniya University and Ruhuna University and the faculty of engineering for the University of
Sri Jayawardenapura.
The Education Ministry and the Government would also fund several projects in 2021. Among them would be 250 million rupees for the 17 storied building for University of Colombo’s medical faculty, Rs. 400 million for a 12-storied building for the Ruhuna University’s faculty of medicine, Rs. 350 million for Ruhuna University’s centre for naval studies and shipping, 270 million for the professorial unit of Ruhuna University’s faculty of medicine and faculty of allied health science and the faculty of medicine for the Sri Jayawardenapura University.
Another Rs.345 million would be allocated by the Education Ministry and the Government for the medical faculties of the Moratuwa and Sabaragamuwa universities. (NF)
