Sharing the holiday cheer with baked seasonal goodies
With less than a week to go for Christmas, one may begin to wonder about finding the best seasonal goodies to fill up one’s Christmas plate. Now more than ever, a cheerful box of Christmas goodies is a great way to share love with friends and family.
This week, we put together a list of small businesses that offer these treats, while maintaining quality and hygiene without compromising on taste.
Baked at Stony’s Christmas has always been a magical time in Sevi Doranegama’s house, and the best part about baking during the season is that she gets to spoil her loved ones with special treats.Sevi commenced her home baking venture, ‘Baked at Stony’s, a year ago. Her products are the result of a series of experimentations with flavours and different baking techniques, all with their own special twist. Created together with her mother, the Baked at Stony’s Christmas treats aren’t your usual fare. The season has always been special to Sevi, since she was a little child. She believes it brings everyone together and fills her home with happiness and of course scrumptious food and desserts. Amongst these are eggnog and ‘Buche de Noel’ (Yule Log). This time around, Sevi hopes to give her customers a taste of her homely traditions with the introduction of ‘Santa’s Night Cap’ . Sevi is stringent about maintaining hygienic standards in her kitchen, and makes sure to wear hairnets, masks and gloves whilst handling the food preparation. She is also extra careful with her ingredients, cutlery and baking utilities, and assures that everything that is brought in is sanitized and cleaned before and after use. Brownie Business Gayani Liyanage is an inbound tour operator turned home baker. She has always enjoyed baking and experimenting in the kitchen, and has discovered brownies to be her best product. Over the last ten years, she tested over a hundred recipes, including those from renowned chefs such as Curtis Stone, Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson and Matt Preston, until she perfected her own version. As the pandemic spread this year, Gayani looked for ways to keep herself occupied and not overthink about what the future holds for tourism. This led her to start her venture ‘Brownie Business’. Baking during the Christmas season has always been special in her household; Gayani loves how her entire house would be engulfed with the fragrances of vanilla, cinnamon, coffee and chocolate. Her Christmas menu includes themed brownies like Trees on a Plate, Santa’s Hats, Pebbles in Snow, Christmas Lights, Santa’s Belt and Grinch in a good mood. She also accepts customized orders. “Most of our regular brownies have been customised according to what our lovely customers have asked for, so we are very keen to hear from them what they would like for Christmas as well,” she says. Cleanliness is a priority in her kitchen. Since working with chocolate is always messy, Gayani ensures her hands are always washed and sanitized. Packaging for the brownies is also done in-house and the final boxed product leaves the kitchen sealed. For more information and orders follow her Instagram page on Brownie_Business.

Nella’s Bakes Shenella Cooray has always been drawn to the smell of Christmas goodies baking in the oven. As a child, she also enjoyed bonding with her mother by helping her out in the kitchen, especially during Christmas. It is this touch of love that she looks to add to her products each season with her part-time home baking venture Nella’s Bakes. Her menu for the season includes the Yule log (with a choice between a classic chocolate Yule log or chocolate Yule log with a homemade strawberry filling.), chocolate crinkle cookies and themed cupcakes with festive designs. Of course, Christmas in her household is never complete without her mother’s Love cake, and Shenella hopes to include this on her menu as well. When it comes to safety, Shenella will be using extra packaging in addition to the usual layer of covering she uses. To avoid exposure, she will not be delivering through third parties, and orders will have to be picked up from the house. She would also consider delivering the products herself, depending on the date, time and location. Although not mandatory, payment through bank transfer is preferred to ensure contactless transactions. For more informationfollow her on Instagram and Facebook @nellasbakes | |
Caked Amaya is a big fan of the Christmas season, and the mouthwatering seasonal desserts are where her heart is at. She enjoys baking while listening to Christmas songs, as they bring back childhood memories of her mother and grandmother baking during the season. At ‘Caked’, her Christmas cupcakes (in vanilla and chocolate) are decorated in cheery green and red. The seasonal menu also includes a special brandy-infused cake. Her products are carefully made with the highest quality ingredients, while adding a flavorful twist to classic recipes. Above all, everything is baked with love and tailored to the needs of her customers. In terms of hygiene, Amaya purchases most of her ingredients online to minimize contact. The packages are then sanitized before usage. Gloves and masks are used in the process of preparation and the cake is then placed in a box and sealed.
