A Muted Christmas

View(s):

The Christmas season is on but the Covid-19 pandemic has cast a melancholic vibe on the celebrations this year.

No hotel extravaganzas, parties, or musical shows render a muted Christmas for Christians around the country.

During the festive season, places like the WTC, Hyde Park Corner, Galle Face in Colombo would usually be crammed with people enjoying the trappings of the season. Even though Christmas lights in Colombo still twinkle, the streets are quiet, and despite shops closing early, business was hardly booming.

With nearly every district around the country reporting Covid-19 cases, people tend to follow health guidelines provided by the health officials to stem the spread of the virus.

Partial lockdowns, travel restrictions and social distancing have surely demolished the festive mood.  Christmas is a little different this year, just like it was last year due to the Easter Attack.

Celebrating Christmas virtually, or with close family members, while consistently taking measures to protect loved ones from the virus would help us to cherish Christmas as always.
