A flicker of fragrance for the New Year
Hand poured candles made with essential oils and natural fragrances, tall “pillar” candles in all colours of the rainbow and fancy decorative candles, you are spoilt for choice all year around.
Stardrop Candles
Graphic designer Khadija Jafferjee is the owner of Stardrop candles which offers hand poured artisanal candles of two different sizes (135ml and 330ml) and wax melts. Wax melts, Khadija explains, are an alternative to essential oils that can be put on oil burners.
Khadija did graphic designing as a major but has found satisfaction in this line of work. “I have always had an immense love for candles,” Khadhija told the Sunday Times Magazine.
“It took us a lot of trial and error to find the right materials that would give the best scent and that were also child-friendly. We use paraffin wax, premium cotton wicks, non-toxic fragrance oils and non-toxic candle dyes. We want to start soy candles soon,” she said.
Stardrop Candles mainly works through Instagram (stardropcandles), but they recently launched a few Christmas products at Leather Collection. They also create custom candles in a variety of scents, colours, sizes and even label designs for their clients. Delivery is available islandwide.
Waxed Flame
Imasha Boteju, a former banker who is professionally qualified in Business Management has a range of customised scented candles available in jars – she calls her brand ‘Waxed Flame’.
“I’ve always wanted to become an entrepreneur and took a chance on my passion in September 2020. The whole concept of Waxed Flame revolves around the idea of enjoying daily moments. We also try to make sure our clients celebrate them with their families, friends and loved ones,” Imasha said.
Waxed Flame uses candle wax and essential oils as key ingredients for their scented candles, which are customised in different colours, designs and various decorations. They are currently an online store only, but may expand into a physical store in future.
“Customers can use Whatsapp, emails or message us on Instagram (waxed_flame) and Facebook (Waxed Flame) and place their orders. They can pay through a bank transfer or cash-on-delivery. Once the order is placed the products will be delivered within two-three days,” Imasha said.
Rekindle
“Candle making is an art and a commitment. You need a lot of patience. I’ve learned so many life lessons through Rekindle – with patience on top of the list,” the owner of Rekindle, which has a range of fragrance candles available in pillars and jars told the Sunday Times Magazine. They also make and sell decorative non-fragrance candles, and hurricane candle structures which are perfect for an outdoor setting, and provide custom printing for their candles.
“Rekindle is all about customisation and we do not really want to have a “one size fits all approach.” We mostly make candles through orders so we can avoid them sitting on our shelves for too long,” the owner of Rekindle said.
They have candles made of paraffin wax, beeswax and eco-friendly soy wax. Rekindle can be contacted through Instagram (rekindlefc) and Facebook (Rekindle) and they deliver islandwide.
Candle Island
Candle Island is another brand with handmade and individually crafted scented candles for homes and living spaces. They infuse luxurious fragrances and natural fragrances into candle wax, which is later poured into beautiful ornamental glass containers.
Their business is solely on social media at the moment and customers can contact them through Instagram (candles_island) to place their orders. They offer islandwide delivery to their customers and have special deals for wedding giveaways, festive scented candles and gift boxes.
