Lawyers beat Doctors by one-wicket in their 13th annual Law-Medical 40-over cricket encounter played at the SSC grounds recently. The match was played following strict health guidelines with restricted spectator participation due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Batting first, the Doctors were skittled out for 167 in 39 overs, with Tharindu Kalinga (38), Sudiranga Walpita (37) and Rajive Nirmalasingham (31) making useful contributions. Thilina Samarasinghe and Akhila Jayasundara claimed two scalps each to put the Lawyers on a winning tone.
The Lawyers chased down the target inside 34 overs but not before losing nine of their batsmen, following a sterling bowling performance by Heshan Amarathunga, who bagged five wickets. Kasun Hettiarachchi and Akhila Jayasundara scored identical knocks of 36, while Ershan Ariyaratnam batted vigilantly through his knock of 30. Besides Amarathunga, Rusiru Jayathilake claimed two wickets.
Lawyer Akhila Jayasundara was adjudged the man-of-the-match for his all-round efforts.
