CTU calls on Govt. to take action against principal who refused to employ male teacher in girls’ school
View(s):The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) called on the Government last week, to take immediate action against the principal of a leading school who has refused to accept a teacher transferred to the school.
The teacher who had taught at St. Paul’s Milagiriya for a period of 11 years had been transferred to the school on January 4, 2021. The principal had refused to take him on the grounds that he was a male teacher, and he could not serve in a girls’ school. It was learned that the security was ordered to send the teacher out of her office after he refused to leave.
The teacher, H.D. Wasantha, had thereby lodged a complaint with the Education Ministry and is awaiting a response.
“She cannot let personal reasons affect her decision on work matters. I have made a complaint to the Police and will also take it up with the Human Rights Commission,” he said.
CTU Secretary Joseph Stalin questioned the authority she had to disregard a decision made by the Education Ministry. He said the principal had also allegedly been involved in corrupt deals during the 2019 grade one admissions.
So far no action had been taken on the alleged charges, according to Mr Stalin. He asked the Education Ministry to inquire into the matter and take disciplinary action against the principal.
“She cannot disregard the Ministry’s decision,” he said.
“We also call on the Government to expedite investigation into the corruption charges she faces with regard to grade one admissions in 2019,” he added. -CC
