An archaeological site at Galkiriyagama in Anuradhapura district has been bulldozed by unidentified persons, according to a complaint lodged with the police.

The site, known as Mahahurullewa is gazetted under the Department of Archaeology. Stone pillars, a moonstone, an ancient stupa and other buildings now lie scattered in pieces.

Officers from the Galkiriyagama Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC)  were the first to be alerted about the destruction. They observed that the inner chamber of the ancient stupa had been dug up, seemingly in an attempt to look for treasure. The DWC officers had alerted the Galkiriyagama police.

Area residents say the site had been ravaged by treasure hunters before and suspect that a powerful area businessman had a hand in the destruction. They are however, reluctant to speak on record fearing their safety.

No arrests have been made so far.
