Sri Lanka’s first ever government certified film institute, Colombo Film School, affiliated to Sri Lanka Foundation Institute has been started with a completely new vision and format under the leadership of award winning filmmaker and teledrama director Sudath Mahadiulwewa.

Functioning under the SLFI, Colombo Film School is to offer both academic and professional training in digital filmmaking and audiovisual media. With the aim of producing next generation of film directors, cinematographers, film editors, sound designers, art directors and artistes belonging to different fields of cinema who will take Sri Lankan cinema to new heights,  plans are underway to initiate a number of new programmes to promote cinema and train new cinema artistes.

Colombo Film School has launched a series of Master classes under the Film Lab project which consists of two components Master classes and Workshops.

As one of the first master class projects, four master classes have been organised with four filmmakers Vimukthi Jayasundara, Boodee Keerthisena, Chinthana Dharmadasa and Jude Ratnam. Three-day long master classes will be held from 9 am to 5 pm covering weekends at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute and only 25 seats will be available. Each course with meals cost Rs. 10,000. Anyone who is interested in following all four master classes will get a special discount.

The participants will have the opportunity to improve their cinema knowledge in the respective fields, engage in discussions with the guest speakers and involve in practical sessions.

The project will start with the master class ‘Cult Cinema with Chinthana Dharmadasa’ from January 23 to 25 while ‘Transcendental Cinema with Vimukthi Jayasundara’ will be from January 29 to 31. ‘Dogma and Guerrilla Cinema with Boodee Keerthisena’ will be from February 5 to 7 while ‘Political Cinema with Jude Ratnam’ will be from February 12 to 14.

Ten more diplomas on cinema are ready to be launched by the Film lab of Colombo Film School and organised develop the academy to a Higher National Diploma and degree awarding institute on cinema.
