Kandy Bar chief calls for new courts complex in land earmarked by President Premadasa
A two-acre Pallekele land earmarked for the construction of a courts complex during the presidency of R Premadasa remains idle.
President’s Counsel and Bar Association’s Kandy District President Shantha Ratnayake told the Sunday Times the case load at the present Kandy courts complex had increased and it was high time the authorities made use of this land to build a second courts complex to ease the work load.
He said the Pallekele land was identified and acquired by the then President Premadasa, perhaps, to ease the traffic congestion in the Kandy city area, but the land had remained idle since then. Instead, valuable paddy land had been acquired to build the present courts complex.
As the case load increases, it would be in the interest of litigants and generations of lawyers to come, to set up a second courts complex, he said, adding that such a move would divide the case load between these two court complexes in Kandy North and South, with two High Courts, and two or three District Magistrate’s Courts.
Mr Ratnayake said the new complex could be built with modern facilities, ample parking and office space for lawyers and litigants.
