Telling their stories on video to bring harmony
View(s):The second Peace Incubator workshop held in the Kandy district from January 22 -25 saw 12 selected participants trained through an online platform to develop their storytelling skills in creating content for videos.
The aim of the project was to equip youth with knowledge and skills to spearhead youth-led initiatives geared towards creating harmony among their communities. The workshop was organized by the International Youth Alliance for Peace (IYAP) with the support of USAID-SCORE and conducted by Dilina Janadith, a young lecturer from the University of Moratuwa.
The young participants of all religions and ethnicities were trained to create their video content and in skills such as critical thinking, creativity, digital storytelling, leadership, equality, social cohesion, and presentation.
“Before participating in the workshop, I did not have an idea about digital storytelling. I had seen many videos on YouTube and always wondered how such content was made. I did not think that there was such a huge effort in creating such videos,” saidSupun, one of the participants.
“I participated in the workshop with some knowledge on video editing and relevant software but I did not have the idea to create content and the methods involved in creating such content. This knowledge will be helpful to me in the future,” said another participant,Janith.
Added Janindi, “There are villages of Tamil estate workers and they have been cornered by the Sinhala community in my area. My aim is to bring their socio-economic problems to light and to highlight the importance of social cohesion.”
Aafrin Yaseen, Project Officer of International Youth Alliance for Peace stated that the main aim of the workshop is to develop social cohesion among the community and that participants should bring that message to society, not in a traditional way, but in a more creative way.
The first Peace Incubator workshop was conducted in Jaffna in September 2020.
