Embarking on a New Journey: Academic Department Establishment of NSBM Faculty of Computing
View(s):Faculty of Computing of NSBM Green University marked another significant milestone to its extraordinary journey towards becoming the best place for technology education. With the great inspiration and guidance of the visionary leader, Vice-chancellor Prof. E. A. Weerasinghe and its top management, NSBM established four departments within the faculty. This comprises the Department of Information and Systems Sciences, Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering and Department of Network and Security, and the Department of Data sciences. Each department is established to enlighten students in a broader way towards its success stories.
The grand opening of the four departments at the faculty of computing was graced by the presence of the Vice-chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Head of Academic Development and Quality Assurance, Deans, Heads, and Members of the Senior Management.
Department of Computer Science & Software Engineering
The Department of Computer Science & Software Engineering is the largest department under the Faculty of Computing. It offers industry-focused, local, and international degree programs under the most demanding skills in Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Web & Mobile Application Development. The department’s key focus is to identify the student’s potential and nurture and transform students with the right skills, knowledge, and attitude to achieve their dream career. Department comprises of faculty members with high academic achievements and research background and visiting faculty members from the industry and foreign universities; Plymouth University(UK), University College of Dublin(Ireland), and Victoria University(Australia), to teach cutting edge technology and industry best practices.
Department of Information
and Systems Sciences
The Department of Information and Systems Sciences focuses on developing professionals who are experts in both IT and business domains. Such a blissful blend promotes developing graduates with both social skills and analytical skills. The core of our curriculum reflects the model created by the Association of Information Systems (AIS), an international society of ISS researchers and teachers. The department’s academic activities range over a wide field characterized by interdisciplinary research and focus on developing and adapting the use of IT to the needs of people, organizations, and society. Our students’ employment rate is extremely high. They get the right positions in both IT and Management sector organizations after being recognized for their expertise in both business and IT domain.
Department of Network
and Security
The Department of Network and Security is a department under the Faculty of Computing. It offers industry-focused local, and international degree programmes specialized in the field of networking and security. The department offers a unique opportunity to achieve their dream career in the field of networking and security, in Information Communication Technology.
The Department of Network and Security focuses on three main areas: Data Communication Networks, Infrastructure Systems (Servers, Datacenters) and Security (both system and infrastructure). The department has built affiliations with the leading Internet Service Providers (ISP) of the country, to provide a real-time experience in sophisticated technology in the aforementioned areas. The department provides a unique learning and research experience to students through the university academic staff, flying faculty members of the University of Plymouth and industrial experts.
Department of Data Science
The Department of Data Science focuses on being the leader in the discipline of Data Science in Sri Lanka, which includes knowledge contribution from the key areas of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, Data Mining, Statistical Modeling, Simulation, Optimization and Visualization. Department of Data Science is preparing to conduct seminars, workshops, and an annual conference in Data Science as its future activities. The department aims to disseminate knowledge and spread global opportunities and business transformation trends with this highly sought after discipline of data science. With a comprehensive plethora of subjects related to data science, the department is ready to launch an undergraduate program to suit the most demanding career.
With the focus of creating graduates to fit with the dynamic and rapidly changing industry, all four departments offer various skills development programs and a modern curriculum. Among them, Industry Preparation Training Programs (IPT) and placements, Soft Skills Development Programs, Research workshops, Tech Talks, Hackathon, and Software Competitions enhance the undergraduates’ technical skills.
