Subjects related to Law, crime and conviction should be mandatory in the school curriculum, as children should be educated in these matters from an early age, a Parliamentarian said recently.

The Parliamentarian Weerasumana Weerasinghe made the proposal  at the ministerial consultative committee on justice meeting held on Thursday in Parliament, when the committee met under the chairmanship of Justice Minister Ali Sabry.

The Justice Minister and the Education Reforms, Promotion of Open Universities and Distance Learning State Minister Susil Premajayantha said the proposal by Mr Weerasinghe  would be looked into and measures would be taken to incorporate legal education to the school curriculum.

The Parliamentarian had also requested to consider the need of having a separate mechanism in the execution of the Law when it comes to school children, as it effects their future and their development.

At the meeting, Parliamentarian Gevindu Kumaratunga also expressed concerns over the mandatory requirement to conduct Law College examinations in English and the Justice Minister said such decisions were taken by the Council of Legal Education.

The Minister said the new reform had no effect upon Law College entrance examinations , and they would be held as usual in all three languages. The Minister also said such measures had been taken to cater to the demands of the sector and to improve on the quality of legal education and practice.
