Style on track
Sri Lanka Railways is refurbishing four dilapidated compartments at the Ratmalana yards and putting them into service, Additional Superintendent of Railways (Mechanical) Keerthi Hewawitharana said.
Converting the old iron compartments into wooden compartments is currently underway at the Ratmalana railway yard at a cost of around Rs 8 million, and the refurbished compartments will be deployed on the upcountry railway line in the near future,” he said.
The iron carriages, which were imported from India about 30 years ago, were previously used for night mail trains and are now being designed as wooden compartments with the assistance of railway carpenters, General Manager Railways, Mr Dilantha Fernando stated.
Mahogany and Teak wood has been used for this and carvings have also been engraved on these railway compartments.
“One compartment is 45 feet long and 9 feet wide, allowing 24 people to travel comfortably in the compartment,” he said.
In this renovation phase the interior, seats, floor and toilets were completely refurbished.
However, the compartment body has been undertaken by the Ratmalana Workshop of Sri Lanka Railways.
Completion of these compartments will be facilitated by Mr G A Krishantha, Project Engineering (Project) Development with the contribution of the employees at the Ratmalana site.
