Ruhunu Marians, Baragama SC, Debarawewa SC, Hambantota CC book semi-final berths
The completion of the league matches of the Independence Trophy T20 cricket tournament which ended over the weekend in venues around the Southern district saw the four group leaders Lunugamwehera Ruhunu Marians (Group A), Baragama SC (Group B), Debarawewa SC (Group C) and Hambantota CC (Group D) succeeding to book the berths to the semi-finals.
The four teams came out on top by winning all the matches with Lunugamwehera Ruhunu Marians and Baragama SC winning three from three to secure six points each while Debarawewa SC and Hambantota CC won their two matches from two to end with four points each.
Meanwhile Rumesh Buddika had the honour of achieving the highest individual score and the best bowling figure of the tournament so far. Rumesh cracked a quick-fire knock of 157 runs in only 73 inclusive of ten boundaries and 13 towering sixes to guide Lunugamwehea SC to record a massive 179 runs win over the hapless Beliatta CC.
Rumesh’s knock helped Lunugamwehera SC taking first lease of the wicket to amass a mammoth 215 for 5 which incidentally is the highest score of the tournament and later in the day he ended with impressive figures of 5 for 12 to bundle them out for a meager 36 runs.
Lunugamwehera Ruhunu Marians will meet Debarawea SC and Baragama SC will clash against Debarawewa SC in the semi-final matches scheduled to be played at the Sooriyawewa International Cricket Stadium. The Independence Trophy T20 cricket tournament conducted by the Hambantota District Cricket Association was contested by 14 teams.
