Keeping the city clean

With a population numbering in the hundreds of thousands, Colombo City continues to accumulate waste in line with its ever increasing population.

Authorities have often expressed a desire to transform the country’s financial capital into the next Singapore, and have continually launched city beautification projects towards this end.

Proper waste management is a central component of this strategy. The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) does much work in this regard. Nevertheless, the process is far from uniform, creating several issues.

In places such as Bauddhaloka Mawatha for instance, we saw how well the trolleys and carts used to collect garbage have been placed on the roadside afterwards.

This was not the case in several other areas, notably in Pettah, where a series of open air bazaars and markets are held. Here, carts filled with garbage have been parked haphazardly in the open, attracting crows and all manner of other creatures.

Such shortcomings need to be rectified urgently if authorities are serious about making Colombo a truly beautiful city.
