SIU asks Sachithra to provide income statements
Former Sri Lanka spinner Sachithra Senanayake has been asked to provide his income statements within 14 days by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), probing an alleged attempt to fix matches during the recent Lanka Premier League (LPL).
Senanayake has been accused of attempting to lure a young player to fix matches at the LPL through telephone calls he made from Dubai. The player concerned had promptly informed the SLC Anti-Corruption Unit on the approach.
Senanayake was extensively questioned by SIU for two days.
Sri Lanka recently made corruption a criminal offence and corruptors can now be charged in a court of law. The SIU was set up as a result of the anti-corruption laws. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is also investigating approaches in the recent LPL.
The Colombo Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday rejected the anticipatory bail application filed by Senanayake, seeking to prevent his arrest over match-fixing allegations.
The LPL was held from November 27 to December 17 in Hambantota, Sri Lanka.
Senanayake, who refuted the allegations, had announced his retirement from all forms of the game in February last year.
He had played 49 One-Day Internationals, 24 T20 Internationals and one Test match.
