The Health Ministry is keeping a close eye on the reported very rare adverse events occurring in connection with the COVID-19 vaccination worldwide, the Director-General of Health Services, Dr. Asela Gunawardena said, assuring that a few deaths reportedly after vaccination in Sri Lanka have been investigated and found to be due to other causes.

“We investigated a report of a woman from Maharagama who got vaccinated this week, developed shortness of breath and died after being brought to the Colombo South (Kalubowila) Teaching Hospital,” he said.

He explained that the woman died of heart failure and her death was not linked to vaccination.

Referring to three earlier reports, Dr. Gunawardena said that the two persons who had died in Divulapitiya 5-6 days after vaccination were found to have succumbed to full-blown Myocardial Infarction (MI) and not due to vaccination. The Buddhist monk’s death was due to major issues caused by chronic asthma and liver problems.
