Colombo’s Sangaraja Madya Vidyalaya marks 150 years
View(s):The past pupils association of Sangaraja Madya Vidyalaya in Colombo declared open a shrine room to mark the 150th anniversary of their school.
The event was graced by famed past pupils such as the former president’s translator and parliament translator M. K. Rahulan, former Labour Ministry Secretary Mahinda Madihewa and the school’s current principal
R. M. Abeysekara.
Sangaraja Madya Vidyala which began as a bilingual primary school in 1870 was declared as the second madya vidyala in Sri Lanka on June 28,1945. The school, which is also renowned as the first madya school in Colombo, has produced many well learned and famed past students.
Some of the past students who made great achievements were S. A. Siripala, who achieved victory in all island boxing championships and the first championship in boxing at the SAARC sports festival.
Apart from him singers Viviyan de Silva Boralessa, Sisira Senaratna and the late Satheesh Perera, lawyer C. Liyanarachchi, Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation Director Jayantha Peiris and former Dinamina Newspaper sports reporter Mahinda Jinadasa were some of the prominent past pupils of this school.
A cricket practice net was also declared open to mark the event.
