The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (SLHRC) had written to the Central Province Education Ministry last week, calling for an explanation on the appointment of an unqualified person to the post of principal in a leading school in Hatton.

In a letter dated March 22, 2021, the SLHRC has called on the provincial education secretary to  provide reasons as to why M. Muvendhan a grade one officer in the principals service was not appointed to the post. The SLHRC sent this letter to the provincial education secretary under its Act no. 21 of 1996.

Mr.  Muvendhan claimed the post had been filled arbitrarily with no proper interviews being held despite the Hatton Zonal Director recommending him for the post. “I was not called for any interview,” he said.

Meanwhile the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said the education ministries in the provinces are making appointments without following due procedures.

“Most of them are political appointments done to appease their party supporters,” Mr.  V. Indraselvan, a CTU member from Nuwara Eliya said.
