Mahagastota hill climb on April 3-4
Sri Lanka’s longest running motorsport event, the Mahagastota Hill Climb, will come alive for the 87th occasion on April 3 and 4 at the Mahagastota Estate in Nuwara Eliya, welcoming the April Season sports activities in the hill country.
The event, organised and conducted by the Ceylon Motor Sports Club (CMSC), will flag off at 8.00am on both days. The hill climb will be a testing course for drivers and riders, who will ascend a challenging distance of 617 metres. A total of 12 motorcar events and 10 motorcycles events have been lined up with over 100 elite drivers and riders set to take the two-day challenge.
The event will be held under strict health regulations issued by the authorities as the organisers have decided to conduct motorcycle events on April 3 followed by motorcar events on April 4.
Ashan Silva holds the record in motorcars when he set a new course timing of 32.643 seconds in the SL GT up to 3500cc event in 2017. The record in the motorcycle category is currently held by Ananda Sampath, who clocked 33.936 seconds in the SM up to 250cc Super Motard event in 2017.
The history of Mahagastota Hill Climb dates back to 1934 and CMSC has organised the first event on September 28 of the same year. The hill climb has been held uninterruptedly ever since except for a few years during the height of the 30-year civil war, and during the previous couple of years due to terrorist bombings in 2019 and COVID-19 in 2020.
Entries are open and can be forwarded to CMSC’s official address at No.2, Hunupitiya Road, Colombo 2 or via email mahagastotte2021@cmsc.lk.
