Seneviratne wins title by Armageddon tie break
S.D.B.K. Senevirathne of Maliyadeva College beat Sanudula Dahamdi of Musaeus College in an exciting match which went till the third tie breaker, the Armageddon game, to complete the 2nd Sri Lanka Youth Under-14 Chess Grand Prix 2021 in style. Sanidula Dahamdi met S.D.B.K. Seneviratne in the finals while Brijeash Saravanabhavan of Gateway College, met Dinul Vinsitha Weerasekera of Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Pannipitiya in the consolation finals.
Sanudula won the first round of the game playing black pieces in the morning while Senevirathne won the second round of the game in the evening. The players shared points and tie breaks were needed to determine the champion. The Arbiters set 15 minutes in the clocks with 10 second increments for the rapid game. There after giving four minutes to Black for Senevirathne and five minutes to the White for Sanidula. Just needing a draw for the title, Seneviratne came back strongly to win the Armageddon game in style.
Seneviratne bagged Rs. 25,000 as cash award with the championship trophy and the gold medal while Sanidula claimed the silver medal with a cash award of Rs. 15,000. Brijesh won the consolation finals convincingly and received Rs. 10,000 in cash with the bronze medal. Dinul had to satisfy at fourth place with a cash reward of Rs. 5,000.
The respective group winners, Sanidula, Dinul and Disal Weerasekara of Dharmaraja College in Group ‘X’ and Seneviratne, Brijeash and Vivas Samarakoon of Royal College were awarded with the group medals of gold, silver and bronze with winners receiving trophies.
The first round of the 2nd Sri Lanka Youth Under-14 Chess Grand Prix 2021 was held with the participation of 24 leading youth players in the country. The event was held under the health guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and the Director General of Sports Medicine Unit, Ministry of Sports. The event was conducted by Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) in two 11-round, round robin events ‘X’ and ‘Y’ with the winner and runner-up in each group playing a knockout round for the championship.
The award ceremony was held after the event at the CFSL headquarters in Nugegoda with Luxman Wijesuriya, the President of CFSL as chief guest. Malith Akalanka, CFSL Secretary General and Erosh Jayasinghe also attended. The entire event was live broadcasted using DGT Chess Boards while live streaming with commentaries from the national chess champion Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage and former national chess champion, Dulan Edirisinghe.
