CFW : Circularity trends for Summer

View(s):

Starting a new chapter for the fashion industry where societal and environmental wellbeing takes centres tage, Day Two and Three of the 18th edition of HSBC Colombo Fashion Week saw ‘Circularity in Fashion’ in action as this year’s line-up of key designers presented their latest collections for a glamorous and eco-conscious Summer 2021 at the Shangri-La Hotel.

Day 2

Day Two kicked off with a journey around the world through an ultra-feminine cosmopolitan collection by Charini Suriyage, evoking nostalgia for international travel through stunning prints of city views. Staying with the international theme, Fouzul Hameed presented the ‘Global Wedding Collection’ featuring wedding attire in a stylish blend of traditional and ethnic, from local to European looks.

In her signature style of abstract batik, Dinushi Pamunuwa blended bold prints with simple, sleek silhouettes for La Pard’s latest collection, followed by Himashi Wijeweera who combined the colours of the twilight sky with tiered pieces accented by her signature design element of  Beeralu lace. Next up was Conscience, in collaboration with Sharmila Ruberu, who put Circularity into action through converting unused pieces from previous collections for an innovative zero-waste menswear collection.

Closing the show with a bang, Amilani Perera once again partnered with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to launch ‘WITH HER’ – a collection that raises awareness on the social responsibility to provide care for survivors of domestic violence. The elegant collection featured diverse pieces in hand-drawn prints and handloom fabrics made by survivors of violence.

Day 3

The final night of CFW 2021 packed plenty of punch. Aslam Hussain’s bold, structured creations brought colour and drama to the runway, while Nilusha Maddumage used rusted metal tones and natural fibre materials to create a sharp, post-apocalyptic street casualwear collection. Keeping with the darker colour palette, Ayesh Milendra Wickramaratne’s ethereal ‘Into The Dark’ collection focused on draping and zero-waste methods to create flattering, transformable silhouettes with visually interesting embellishments.

CFW’s first ever Bridal Showcase (see top of page)  featured curated bridal looks from designers such as Amilani Perera, Dhananjaya Bandara (DB Ceylon), Charini Suriyage, Himashi Wijeweera, Sonali Dharmawardena, Aslam Hussein and Fouzul Hameed.

Closing this edition of CFW, Sonali Dharmawardena combined her signature artistic batik style with timelessly elegant statement pieces in shades of green and yellow and dreamy floral prints — driving home the eternal value of garments created with care.
