Thehan, Savini win singles titles
Savini Jayasuriya continues her form with the second title in weeks
Champions in the Clay Court Nationals were crowned yesterday at the SLTA Tennis courts with high school students Thehan Wijemanne of Royal College and Savini Jayasuriya of Gateway College taking the Men’s and Women’s Open Singles titles respectively.
Both Thehan and Savini had to pull out all the tricks out of their bags to come out victorious in closely contested finals. Thehan overcame the experienced Luca Knese, who had already bagged two major titles this year– the 105th Colombo Championship and the SSC Open Championship, by 2-1 and in the process went on to bag his maiden major title of his career.
On the other hand Savini, who earlier had clinched the SSC Open title, too underwent some anxious moments against her arch rival Janali Manemperi before coming out on top by the same winning margin of 2-1 to bag her first Clay Court national win.
