The Examination Department still has not paid around 20,000 teachers who were involved in paper marking after the 2020 A/L exams, the Ceylon Teachers Union  (CTU) said last week.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin  said although the Treasury had allocated a sum of Rs 280 million for payments none of these teachers have been paid yet.

“This is in spite of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations this week,” he said.

“The funds are being used up to appease the examination department staff who protested demanding for overtime payments,” he alleged.

The Examinations Commissioner however, denied the charges and said up to around 75% teachers have been paid so far.

“The  rest will receive their payments in due time,” he said. (CC)
