I was not SLC president when wire transfer fraud took place- Thilanga
View(s):Former Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Thilanga Sumathipala says he was not the President of the board when the illegal transfer of US$187,000 to a foreign account took place in 2018. The case is currently being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Responding to Opposition MP Chaminda Wijesiri, Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa told Parliament that reports by the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) had revealed earlier that a misappropriation of Rs 29 million had taken place during the period Sumathipala served as SLC.
In his letter, Sumathipala said the statement made by the Minister Rajapaksa is “factually incorrect” as the alleged financial misappropriation incident took place during the time that the then Sports Minister Faiszer Musthapha had appointed a Competent Authority to oversee overall responsibility of SLC.
Sumathipala alleged the said accusation “has been made to personally vilify me for narrow partisan political purposes.”
