2020 A/L results: More than 60 percent of students eligible for university entrance

As many as 64 percent of the students who sat the G.C.E A/L examinations last year will be eligible to apply to state universities,  but less than a quarter of those students will be able to make to state universities, Education Ministry statistics revealed recently.

A total of 301,771 candidates – including 277,625 for the new syllabus and 24,146 for the old syllabus – faced the exam last year.

Of them as many as 194,297 candidates (64.39%) have qualified for university entrance by gaining the minimum qualification to enter

The results of 86 candidates have been suspended due to various irregularities.

The Examinations  Department said the details of the online application procedure for the re-scrutinisation of answer scripts will be notified in due time. However, any  inquiries regarding the results can be directed to the School Examinations Organisation & Results Branch on the following numbers: 0112784208 / 0112784537 / 0113140314 / 0113188350 and the Hotline number 1911.

Meanwhile, some of the best results of the 2020 A/L examinations came from the rural areas with two students from Thakshila Madya Vidyalaya in  Horana gaining the first place in two different streams.

Avishka Chanuka gained All Island first place in the engineering technology stream while Pussewela Kankanamge Susika Sandasara recorded the first place in bio-technology.

Chanuka had gained nine distinctions for the O/L exams while studying at the Bandaragama National school and had entered Thakshila vidayalya with his O/L results.

Sandasara had gained eight ‘A’s and one B at the O/L exams while studying at Kalutara Tissa Vidyalaya before entering Thakshila Vidyalaya with his O/L results.

In the Maths stream, Thanaraj Sundarabhawan of Hindu College at Chavakachcheri in Jaffna gained the first place, while Amandi Madanayake of Sangamitta Balika in Galle gained first place in the commerce stream. The first place in the arts stream was gained by Chamika Sewmini from Presbyterian School in Dehiwala.
