Far from normal
Despite so many warnings, arrests show how people ignore health guidelines such as wearing masks, social distancing or handwashing.
When Sri Lanka’s official number of Covid-19 deaths was reported at 764, it seems some people forgot there ever was a pandemic.
Amid rising patient numbers in the country, wearing masks seem to be the most basic, cost-effective means to combat Covid-19.
It is evident that the effectiveness of hand washing has dwindled as in many places broken taps or adequate washing facilities have not been provided; no taps or sanitisers can be seen at the entrance of places.
People’s fear of getting infected, seen early in the pandemic, has now evaporated.
Some people have forgotten to wear masks which is still a must amid the surge of the virus. Most people think that wearing a mask is only for self-protection, which is true. But it also prevents spreading infection.
Despite the high risk of contracting Covid-19, it is rare to see people maintaining social distance in public places.
If people are not cautious about the seriousness of following health measures a closure of the country will be necessary.
Leading epidemiologists suggest that people may need to continue wearing face masks and social distance for several years until we return to normalcy. It is the responsibility of each citizen to reduce the number of years the pandemic will stay with us by following basic measures.
