Supuna and Ishara win Singles titles
Supuna Warusavithana and Ishara Madurangi bagged the Singles titles in Men’s and Women’s of the All-Island Open Ranking Table Tennis Championship 2020 conducted by the Sabaragamuwa Province Table Tennis Association (SPTTA).
Supuna, of University of Moratuwa, beat up and coming star paddler Senura Silva of Ananda College 3-1 in the Men’s Singles final while Ishara of Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), overcame Muthumali Piyadarshani of Sri Lanka Navy, 3-1 in the Women’s Singles final.
Supuna lost the first set 11/13 to Senura, but the eventual champion came back strongly to win the sets to follow by 11/7, 11/9 and 11/7 to emerge the winner.
In the semi-finals Supuna was made to fight by Krishan Wickramarathna of Vidyartha College OBA before the thrilling encounter ended 3-2 in favour of Supuna. Senura too had to experience an early blow, but bounced back well to recover and outsmart Nirmala Jayasinghe of MAS by 3-1 to reach the final.
In the Women’s final Ishara too received an early shocker from Muthumali, who won the first set 11/6. But Ishara bounced back to easily claim the three sets to follow 11/8, 11/5 and 11/8.
Ishara had to overcome a daunting task to defeat Erandi Warusavithana of Raigam Marketing by 3-2 in the first semifinal while Muthumali too had a tough outing against Hansani Piyumila of Sri Lanka Navy before recording a 3-2 win to reach the final.
The two-day competition was held under the patronage of Kanaka Herath, who is also the president of Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka, on March 20 and 21 at the Municipal Council Indoor Staium in Kegalle. Guests of honour were Tharanga Jayaweera (Member of Pradeshiya Sabha, Galigamuwa), Sameera Perera (Member of Municipal Council, Kegalle), Prabhath Priyantha (President of Sabaragamuwa Province TTA), Thushara Sampath (Secretary of Sabaragamuwa Province TTA) and D.M.G.S. Kumara (Chairman of Organising Committee).
