Don’t Let Yesterday’s Regrets and Tomorrow’s Fears Steal Today’s Happiness
View(s):If you ask someone how they are, the most common answer you would hear is “Not too bad mate”. As a matter of fact, it is sad to see people describe their state of life using the term “bad” as the benchmark. Whenever someone asks me that question my dauntless answer is always “Well, I am moving upward and forward”. Challenges are a part and parcel of life that we must face until we leave this world. Nevertheless, it is important to carry an attitude of “overcoming” and not merely “backing off”. It is sad to see people like walking skeletons with a miserable appearance unable to enjoy the happiness of the present moment. Let us take into consideration the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic, if you have taken all adequate safety measures, then there is no necessity to worry, as worrying would not help you to stand independently.
Worry is not a source of energy which has the capability to stop anyone dying from the virus. The more you worry the more rapid the deterioration of your physique, however if your mind is strong, you will have the ability to battle well, even though your body is weak. I heard a typical incident recently of a famous trainer who took his mom, who was a cancer patient to the doctor. After diagnosing the mother, during her absence the doctor told the trainer that his mother would survive only for another three months. Upon returning from the doctor’s, his mother asked him what the doctor said. He said that the doctor said she is fine and strong. This lady was firmly convinced with this statement that she clenched it into her mind with great happiness and went on to live for three years in a context where the doctor assured only three months.
The two greatest enemies, who could steal your happiness are the Regrets you have about Yesterday and the Fear you have about Tomorrow. All of us have made mistakes in life, but there is no point of regretting about what we have done and what we could have done in the past. It takes time to regret and that time is the “present”. So, every minute you spend on regretting about yesterday, you lose the ability to utilise your present to seize an opportunity in the present. At the start of the second inning in my life, I was bombarded with continuous negativity that made an effort to steal my present, by enslaving me to regretful thoughts on foolish and disastrous things I did, what I lost and good things that I could not achieve. I saw my friends drive by in luxurious vehicles when I was walking in the streets with a pair of rubber slippers on. At that time if I had invested my present on regretting about my past, then I would not be able to do all the wonders I did during that time which then was my present. Every time I was attacked by regrets, I kept on focusing on my source of strength, thereby I strengthened myself and moved forward. Every girlfriend I had, left me the moment they got to know who I was and what I had. I started the second chapter in my life without even a foot cycle nor a bank account. I constantly rejected regretful thoughts and its roots. I toiled committedly in the present. I did not allow yesterday’s regrets to steal today’s happiness from me.
The other thing that steals your happiness in the present, is the fear that people have about tomorrow. Investing your thoughts on the uncertainty of the future would definitely steal your ability to capture the opportunities of the present, as you are so busy being anxious about the fears of tomorrow. None of us are assured of what would happen tomorrow. The first thing I do as I open my eyes in the morning is thank Godfor, I am breathing and alive. When we go to bed at night, we are not assured that we will definitely open our eyes the next morning. Just as you do not have the authority to choose the womb and date you come into this world, you also do not have the liberty to decide the date, state and location that you are going to leave this world. This simply justifies that the history and the future are beyond our control. Only the future lies under your belt, so why not invest your utmost to the present, if you forego investing your fullest in the present, then the present will also be accumulated as yet another regretful yesterday. A number of regretful yesterdays will compile into many fearful tomorrows.
Do you consistently keep shedding tears about what happened yesterday? Or do you worry about what is going to happen tomorrow and miss the opportunity to live the present at its best? When you do what you have to do in the present to the maximum, then it will be added to history as a successful day. A lot of successful days create many confident todays. Many confident todays bestows you the positive energy you require to step into uncertain tomorrows. Think of my story, I was a beggar in the street and I was once admitted to the national mental hospital in Angoda. Today, I am a life coach, a well-respected university lecturer and a renowned CEO. I never let my yesterday nor my tomorrow steal my today, because I am aware that letting them steal my today will never allow me to have good todays, which will compile as many good yesterdays.
Last week, we lost our dear petBrundo. He left us at his good old age. As human beings we all cried but we all, including my six year old daughter Esther, moved forward from the next day onwards, knowing that there is nothing that can be done to have him back, moreover all of us are content about how we loved him and treated him while he was alive. If we did not treat him well, then our regrets will grasp the opportunity to attack us, but since we did everything we could do in the present while he was alive, we all reaped fruits for the future.
Regrets from yesterday and worries of tomorrow are two deadly weapons that you must uproot from rock bottom. The more you entertain them, the more they will grow up to beauthoritative and take control over your thoughts. Once aforce takes control over your thoughts, it is as if you have been purchased by another, you do not belong to yourself. You are what you think. If what you think is not productive, then you will not be productive either. Today, I havegained multifold than all that I lost during my youth. Therefore, do not let the regrets of yesterday and the worries of tomorrow steal the present moment in time. This moment will never come again, therefore enjoy it to the maximum. Your daughter will never be five (5) again, and your son will never be twelve (12) again. Do what you ought to do at this very momentand enjoy life to the fullest.
“Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.” — Alice Morse Earle
