Differently-abled student from Kandy passes A/L exam with flying colours
View(s):A student who enrolled at Kandy Girls’ High School for her A/L exams, after receiving eight A’s and a B in the O/L exam at Suwarnamali Balika Vidyalaya , received two A’s and a B at last year’s A/L exam.
To anyone, it could be a normal achievement, but Watsala Yasanthie Kumari Muthukuda is not a student who led a normal life. She had to face 27 surgeries, and the last one was in August 2020.
Her father is a public servant in the higher echelons of the service. But, several medical specialists, revealed that Watsala’s mother had been infected with a virus, while pregnant.
Watsala had to undergo 27 surgeries as she had no arm below her right elbow. Plastic specialist surgeon Ms. Kanapathipillai had taken many efforts to make sure this student could go through with her education. On the other hand, dental specialist Dr. Ratnakumar did also take many efforts to correct her nose and mouth, which had their own deformities.
After completing the O/L exam, Watsala had to leave Suwaranamali Balika Vidyalaya as this school did not have special facilities for students with disabilities. But, fortunately Kandy Girls’ High School had the facilities for special education, and she passed the A/L exam with two A’s and one B in zoology, chemistry and physics.
She is a good example for any student who determines to stand out in his or her studies.
