An extraordinary feat was accomplished by members of the Bee Protection and Conservation Association, when they removed 57 giant beehives from a water tank more than 100 feet above ground level at the University of Peradeniya water purifying plant, opposite the Faculty of Engineering, on the Kandy-Gampola road

These giant bees were living alongside around 150 swallow birds which had made their nests near the water tank. A member of the conservation society said the bees had never harmed the birds, and the animals had co-existed for more than 40 years.

Operation sting: Removing the beehives

But the university officials and officials from the Kandy Water Drainage Board thought it would be best to remove the giant beehives, which were increasing in number.

They feared the students coming into the university premises and the vehicles and buses passing through, might disturb the giant bees and cause a chaotic situation.

Therefore, the Bee Protection and Conservation Association assisted with this situation. The nests of the swallows remain, while the hives alone were removed.
