All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) Leader Rishad Bathiudeen, who is in Criminal Investigation Department (CID) custody, was admitted to the National Hospital in Colombo yesterday due to a suspected heart attack.

Mr Bathiudeen had complained to CID officers last morning that he was feeling ill. They had, thereafter, taken him to the Outpatient Department (OPD) of the National Hospital. After being checked by the doctors, Mr Bathiudeen was admitted to the hospital’s Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU), Police Spokesman Senior Deputy Inspector General  Ajith Rohana said.   An ACMC source said that Mr Bathiudeen was later admitted to the hospital’s Cardiology Unit, where he underwent an echocardiogram (echo test). He has been placed under police guard .

The ACMC Leader and his brother Riyaj Bathiudeen have been detained by the CID under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) since April this year after being arrested on charges of aiding and abetting the terrorists behind the Easter Sunday attacks.

Police are also carrying out a separate investigation into the death of a 16-year-old girl who was working as a domestic aid at Mr Bathiudeen’s house. The victim had been hospitalised after suffering burn injuries but had died after 12 days in hospital.
