Kottawa: Pedestrians dependent on vehicular lights

Accidents on pedestrian crossings have become increasingly common now, though they are meant to be the safest place to cross roads.

Over the years local authorities responsible for illuminating the roads have realised that some of the road accidents taking place on the pedestrian crossings at night time could have been avoided by better lighting of the place.

Some local councils, including the Colombo Municipal Council, took steps to light up the area to ensure that the pedestrian crossings are very visible at night. Millions of rupees have been spent on the project.

But, unfortunately, these lamps have been neglected or are not maintained in some locations, resulting in poor visibility at night leading to accidents.

It is up to the local authorities to maintain the lighting systems as they help to save lives.

These pictures show some of the malfunctioning lights in Colombo city and suburbs.
