Teachers to withdraw from exam duties and paper corrections if salary issue not resolved

Teachers will abstain from exam duties and paper corrections, if they fail to obtain a reasonable solution to their salary issues by Monday, Sri Lanka Teacher Services Union General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said recently.

He said they were not accepting the statement made by Prime Minister Rajapaksa that there was not enough money to adjust the salary anomaly.

“The Government is spending a large sum of money on defence and increasing perks for Parliamentarians. If they reduced these expenses we too, can hold back our demands for a reasonable period of time,” he said.

Earlier they were promised that the salary grades were being prepared, but at last week’s discussion they were told that a subcommittee was to be appointed to resolve the issue, Mr Jayasinghe said.

He said another discussion was held with ministers Udaya Gammanpila, Gamini Lokuge and Bandula Gunawardena on Thursday, but that was not successful even though they promised to take up the matter at the Cabinet meeting.

He said they were already carrying a boycott of online classes and have withdrawn from G.C.E. O/L practical exams. Principals too have withdrawn from their duties.

Mr Jayasinghe said they plan to continue their protest campaigns from Monday onwards.
