SLAF takes Kanugahawewa model village sky high in months

The new buildings and houses built by the SLAF were vested by Minister Namal Rajapaksa.

The Kanugahawewa model village renovation project’s second phase has been completed, after it was launched by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on December 30 last year.

This project was taken over by the Air Force Commander Sudarshana Pathirana to mark the 70th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) this year. Sports and Youth Affairs Minister and Digital Technology and Enterprise Development State Minister Namal Rajapaksa presided at a ceremony to mark the event, at this model village in the Anuradhapura district.

The Kanugahawewa village is home to more than 300 families comprising about 900 people. Based on the needs of those in Kanugahawewa, renovation of the Kanugahawewa Abinawarama Viharaya, Kanugahawewa Primary Vidyalaya and the Halmillawetiya Vidyalaya, the building houses for those who cannot afford to build a house on their own and many other development projects were undertaken by the SLAF.

Under the first phase the Abinawarama Viharaya’s new bell tower, renovation of the “Bodhi Prakaraya”, renovation of the sangawasa building, renovation of the wash room complex of the temple, a new teachers quarters building, a school play ground, home gardening project, main hall for the Kanugahawewa Primary School, renovation of the IT Lab and the Halmilla Wetiya Vidyalaya wash room complex were completed. In addition, 13 houses were built.

In the second phase, which was completed this week, an office building for the Kanugahawewa Primary School, a daham pasala building for the Abinawarama Viharaya and 12 completed houses were vested by Minister Namal Rajapaksa.

The SLAF is continuing with this development project and plans to complete many projects which include the construction of the Kanugahawewa seva piyasa, construction of the Halmilla Wetiya seva piyasa, renovation of the office of the Halmilla Wetiya Medical Officer of Health and the construction of a volleyball court.

This entire development project was handled by the Directorate of Civil Engineering under the leadership of the Acting Director Civil Engineering, Air Commodore Udula Wijesinghe. Based on the location of the Kanugahawewa village, the SLAF Vavuniya base is entrusted with coordinating all matters relating to these development projects.
