Hyacinth Wijeratne : ‘Mother’ of mini screen no more
View(s):Veteran actress Hyacinth Wijeratne died on July 30 in a vehicle accident that took place while she was returning to Colombo after shooting a teledrama in Nuwara Eliya. According to the police the van she was travelling in had fallen down a precipice on the Nuwara Eliya – Talawakelle road at Lindula in Talawakelle.
Hyacinth was 75 years old. Playing the role of the mother in many teledramas, she was popularly known as the ‘Mother of Mini screen’.
She made her acting debut playing in film ‘Pembara Madu’ in 1977. She was known for her breakthrough roles in ‘Karumakkarayo’, ‘Tharaka Mal’, ‘Ektemge’ ,‘Ho Gaana Pokuna’ and many more. She also played in other films like ‘Valampuri’ (1981), ‘Thunwani Yaamaya’ 91983), “Kiri Madu Wel (1985), Kristhu Charithaya (1990), Surabidena (1993) and ‘Jayagrahanaya (1994). Hyacinth started her acting career in theatre and later excelled in both television and cinema.
