This week, the Cabinet of Ministers gave approval to broadcast the educational content of the Gurugedara educational TV programme on seven TV channels.

They also agreed to expand the number of such channels to 20 in future. The Education Ministry is also planning on introducing these TV channels in collaboration with Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), through PEO TV.

Last week the Education Times reported about the Government’s plans to reach students through these channels.

A note submitted to the Cabinet this week, said it has been become difficult to open schools due to the pandemic, and various measures have been taken to continue education for students.

Under this, the e-thaksalawa Learning Management System, Gurugedara educational TV programme, which will be conducted by joining the Eye and Nethra channels of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, and home based learning programmes have been launched at national level.

The provincial education departments also have launched programmes on local radio channels, the education management system and YouTube channels, the note said.

However, since the current broadcast time is not sufficient to broadcast all subjects from grade one to grade 13 in Sinhala, Tamil and English, SLT has agreed to provide seven dedicated channels for broadcasting educational content free of charge through PEO TV.

Last week the Education Ministry also launched the radio channel Vision FM to air education programmes for school children.

The full time channel designed in collaboration with Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) will exclusively air lessons conducted in classrooms.

For this purpose the channel, in collaboration with the National Institute Education (NIE), has recorded around 7000 programmes.

The programmes will include 65% of content directly linked to subjects and 35% of content on extracurricular activities within a broad spectrum that will be beneficial to children.

Steps are also underway to introduce more broadcasting channels solely to disseminatelessons.

Currently, the Ministry conducts Gurugedera and e-thaksalawa programmes through state TV channels, through which most syllabuses are being covered for various grades.
