With the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring the Mu variant (B.1.621) as one of “interest”, experts told the Sunday Times that the first priority for Sri Lanka is to deal effectively with the rampaging Delta variant which is leaving a trail of death and destruction within the country.

“It is not clear whether Mu will be able to replace Delta. All that Sri Lanka can do is to be extra cautious about incoming travellers and tourists,” an expert reiterated.

The WHO declared Mu a variant of interest on Monday (August 30). It was first detected in Colombia (South America) in January this year and is now in 40 countries including the United States of America, South Korea and Japan.
