University admissions list to be released next month: UGC Chairman
View(s):The list of university admissions will be released early next month with the stage set for the beginning of the new academic year.
With the release of the entry list universities will be able to open their campuses, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Sampath Amaratunge told the Education Times.
He said the UGC has been able to make arrangements to enroll students in a short period after the G.C.E. (A/L) results were released.
Explaining some of the measures that will be taken to expedite the process, he said the UGC had obtained videos to assess the practical skills of students who have applied for university admission.
Because practical examinations could not be held for aesthetic subjects such as dancing and music before last year’s A/L examination results were released, three separate committees assessed the students’ skills before deciding on the admissions.
Prof. Amaratunge said after the students are enrolled they can begin their lectures online, so they do not miss out on their studies due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said this year 42,000 students will be enrolled after 130,000 applications were received.
The UGC granted extra time for applicants who were unable to submit applications for university admissions for the 2020/2021 academic year, before the deadline. Accordingly applicants who were unable to apply online for the university admissions were given time till June 18.
