E-mithudama – IIT’s helping hand to rural schools
The Rotaract Club of the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) has initiated a project to support rural children and schools in computer literacy.
“E-mithudama” is one of the core projects conducted by the IIT Rotaract Club under the sub branch of “X-Labs”. So far, it has been implemented in three schools with some 15 computers being distributed. The rural primary schools they have helped are Pu / Galawewa Maha Vidyalaya, Angampitiya Kanishta Vidyalaya and Pitumpe Kanishta Vidyalaya.
July saw the club members working on the computer lab of Angampitiya Kanishta Vidyalaya which had been shut down for five years owing to the lack of facilities. The team provided the students with modern computers, painting and refurbishing the lab, thus restoring it to an operative state.
“Even though this year was a challenging year for the club, we were able to successfully go ahead with this initiative of bridging the digital divide among the rural and urban students,” said the President of the Club, Induwara Mapalagama.
The Rotaract Club volunteers are hopeful that with more funds and equipment the E-mithudama project could be expanded to help students from rural schools reach their maximum potential in the IT sector.
