Small classes in a caring learning environment
View(s):UTS Sri Lanka’s deep commitment to student success
Commencing higher education is a significant life step. It involves a major transition for most students. Research indicates that students succeed in their first year of tertiary study if they have positive interactions with their learning environment, including with teachers, during class time. In fact, this kind of positive, supportive experience matters more than whether they achieved good grades in high school.
That’s why, to ensure students gain maximum benefit from their studies and are intellectually engaged, UTS Sri Lanka has adopted a model of learning that is well suited to those transitioning into university education. Classes are small, student centred, and taught with contemporary facilities and technology. Courses are designed to help students to thrive from the beginning of their studies, and to set them up for success when they complete their degrees at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in Australia. Caring support and smaller class sizes
A robust framework of support services has been tailored specifically to meet the needs of every student on the Colombo campus, and is freely accessible. These services include a Learning Support Program, one-on-one tutorials, study skills workshops, and full-time, dedicated academic advisers. Most importantly, all classes are kept small, with no more than 20 students in a tutorial group. This facilitates a more personal learning experience. There is also an emphasis on collaboration both in and outside of the classroom.
Close collaboration with UTS
Courses at UTS Sri Lanka are designed in collaboration with UTS. This means students can be confident that the educational outcomes for pathway (diploma) courses are the same as for first-year of a UTS undergraduate degree.Students who successfully complete their diploma studies receive guaranteed entry* to the corresponding UTS degree. In fact, most UTS Sri Lanka diplomas take graduates straight to second-year of their UTS degree.
Preparation for success
Ms Alison Hiscox, Principal of UTS Sri Lanka, says, “At UTS Sri Lanka, we share deep commitment to supporting our students as they achieve their academic goals. We believe all students with the potential to succeed at UTS should have every opportunity to do so.Our learning environment has been designed to support the UTS model of learning, and our students access world-class university standards from day one of their studies. We provide thorough preparation for success at university and beyond.”
