US$ 400 million of ADB funds successfully allocated for secondary education: Education Minister

Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has expressed the Government’s appreciation to the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for its funding for local educational programmes.
During a recent meeting with ADB Director General Kenichi Yokoyama at the Education Ministry recently, Mr Gunawardena said ADB funds amounting to US$ 400 million have been effectively used for the development of secondary education sectors.
Mr Gunawardena said that the funding has been useful for the development of science, technology, mathematics and commerce streams in schools.
He also said allocations have been used to implement educational reforms at national and provincial level and to improve training of teachers and principals.
The ADB Director General said Sri Lanka had received the highest funding.
Meanwhile Mr Gunawardena said it was an honour for Sri Lanka to host the 55th ADB Annual Meeting next year.
A Memorandum of Understanding for the event has been signed between the ADB and Treasury Secretary S. R. Attygalle on behalf of the Sri Lankan Government.
The ADB will hold its annual meeting under the theme ‘positioning a climate-resilient green economy for the post-COVID-19 world.’
The conference will be attended by 3,000-5,000 delegates from member countries, including finance ministers, central bank governors, company executives and international bank representatives and the ADB board of governors.
It is scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka from May 2-5, next year.
