With the COVID-19 coronavirus still running rampant, this year’s Children’s Day celebrations were different in more ways than one.

With change comes adaptation and, taking this in their stride, Pick a Book went a step ahead to make this day a special one for our little munchkins. Children and their childhood needs to be celebrated and with a day appointed exclusively for them, it’s only fit that our kids get their share of celebration.

With this in mind, Pick a Book organised an online event, sponsored by Nestle’s Milo as an event partner, where the little stars could have fun with full flair. Like with everything else that has happened due to the pandemic, the kids who participated took to the online event with great enthusiasm. Pick a Book organized a three-day Children’s Day event online with an exciting lineup of fun activities for the kids to enjoy.

With 200 enthusiastic participants, the online event kicked off on the 1st of October with a Junior Author’s Saga followed by two days of a writing competition held on the 2nd and 3rd of October. The writing  competition was a huge success with 200 entries – a heartening testament to the readiness of our kids to write and relate a story.

To encourage the budding authors, Pick a Book also organised an event where two junior authors presented their life journey. This part of the event was held prior to the writing competition to encourage and spur the kids on to discover the joys of writing and storytelling.

Both, the presentation by the junior authors and the writing competition, were greatly enjoyed by the participants, as was evident by their excellent entries. The final segment of the three-day Children’s Day celebrations was a fun and interactive riddle game where the kids had to actively bring and show objects as answers to the other participants. Even though the riddle game was held online, all the kids had immense fun, judging by their incessant chatter and giggles throughout the game. The online event came to a close with that and, suffice to say, this year’s Children’s Day celebrations hosted by Pick a Book was a massive success in many ways with the kids.

From the onset, Pick a Book has been striving to inspire positive change through books and literature, even among kids. The Pick a Book Junior’s Club was initiated with that desire in mind. Today, the PAB Junior’s club is going strong with kid authors and aspiring junior authors increasing by the day.

Through the zeal the kids have shown with their participation in the book club, Pick a Book is certain in the fact that the literary future of Sri Lanka is safe.

Pick a Book is committed to continue working on inculcating the habit of reading and to learn to appreciate the works of literature and its effect on our lives.  Judging by the success the book club is enjoying, it is safe to say that Pick a Book is very well on track to achieve its goals.
