Students enjoy practical advantages at UTS Sri Lanka
A new semester at UTS Sri Lanka begins on 8 November, with Orientation during the week commencing 2ndNovember. This presents a unique opportunity for students to prepare for success at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Australia’s top ranking young university . Students whose plans may have been affected by current international travel restrictions can commence their courses very soon, right here in Colombo. Programmes at UTS Sri Lanka are designed in collaboration with UTS, so students benefit from the same world-class university standards from day one of their course – with the security of knowing they’re on a pathway to complete their studies at UTS when travel reopens.
A Practical approach to teaching and learning
Throughout their studies at UTS Sri Lanka, students are exposed to a teaching model based on lifelong learning skills, with small classes, formative assessments, generous face-to-face hours, and an emphasis on collaboration in and outside the classroom. This same model of hands-on, practical learning will form the basis of their experience when they complete their degrees at UTS in Sydney.
The UTS practice-oriented model of learning has three distinctive features: It combines exposure to professional practice with an emphasis on international engagement, and strong links to research. This combination of academic rigour and cutting-edge technology equips graduates for lifelong learning.Major projects, group work, and real-life case studies are integral to the practice-based approach, giving students the skills they need to impress future employers. Students at UTS work with teachers who are experts in their professional field, which means they are exposed to the most current industry practices and networks. In other words, they graduate ‘industry-ready.’
Real-world engagement
The experience at UTS is supported by strong relationships with industry, with industry advisory boards leading all faculties. Courses offer extensive practical components, developed in close collaboration with industry partners, so students apply their theoretical learning in a real-world context. The aim is to produce graduates who are confident, with strong academic knowledge and personal skills, and are well-equipped for the future of work anywhere in the world. UTS offers students real industry experience through guided internships, paid work placements, community organisations, authentic simulations, and case-study assessments.
Hands-on learning
Vihan, from Colombo, enrolled in the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering at UTS, after completing a Diploma of Engineering. His career goal is to work as a designer-engineer in the manufacturing industry. He says, “I feel like UTS is focused on real-life applications. I gained hands-on learning opportunities rather than just theory and studying books. The syllabus and teaching structure are very well organised, which helps students to use the skills they learnt in one subject onto a new scenario in another subject. This way, our skills are polished throughout the four-year course.”
Muzammil, from Kurunegala, also valued the real-world aspects of his Diploma of Business at UTS Sri Lanka. “My best memory from my time here has been the interactive workshops where UTS organises professionals from different industries to share their knowledge and experience with students.”
Preparing students for a changing world
Ms Alison Hiscox, Principal of UTS Sri Lanka, says, “Students joining our pathway (diploma) programmes in Colombo benefit from the same practical approach as their peers in Sydney. Our learning environment has been designed to support the UTS model of learning, and our practical approach equips graduates with the skills they need as they prepare for the challenges of a rapidly changing world. They access world-class university standards from day one of their studies, preparing them for success as they complete their degrees in Australia.”
